Designing the companion app for a new generation of off-road vehicles

Product designer — connected vehicle app

01 — Context

An app for a brand built on not over-engineering

1
brand principle — every design decision tested against "does this add or remove noise?"

The connected vehicle app needed to give Grenadier owners control over their vehicle without adding digital noise to what is fundamentally a physical, tactile experience. The app had to feel as engineered as the vehicle itself.

02 — Insight

Owners use this vehicle — they don't display it

3
use moments — pre-trip preparation, in-field diagnostics, post-trip vehicle care

The app needed to serve a working relationship with a vehicle, not a lifestyle aspiration. Use clustered around three moments: pre-trip, in-field diagnostics, and post-trip care.

03 — Process

Structured around use, not categories

0
decorative UI elements — every visual decision earned its place

The app was structured around the three use moments, not conventional categories. Visual language borrowed from analogue instrumentation — high contrast, no decorative chrome. Every state shown was a state the system could actually produce.
